Experiencing daytime sleepiness is something that is usually perceived as a minor inconvenience, but for older adults, it could be an early warning sign of Dementia. This neurodegenerative disease leads to the progressive decline of brain cells. This eventually affects memory, cognition, and personality, making everyday tasks more difficult. As one of the fastest-growing neurological disorders across the world, dementia poses a significant health threat to ageing populations. <h2>Is Dementia Linked To Poor Sleep? </h2>Daytime sleepiness is a direct result of poor sleep quality. Now, a recent research, published in the journal Neurology, highlighted a potential link between poor sleep and the development of dementia, particularly a condition called motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR). The study found that 35.5% of participants who reported extreme daytime sleepiness developed MCR, which is a precursor to dementia. For this study, researchers followed 445 older adults (average age 76) over three years, aiming to determine whether poor sleep could increase the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which often leads to dementia. At the start, none of the participants had MCI, but by the end of the study, 36 individuals had developed the condition. The researchers discovered that participants with poor sleep were more likely to develop MCI compared to those who slept well. However, when depression symptoms were taken into account, the link between poor sleep and MCI became less pronounced, suggesting that while sleep issues are a concern, mental health also plays a key role in dementia risk. To assess sleep quality, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used, evaluating factors such as sleep duration, disturbances, and daytime alertness. Among these, "daytime dysfunction"—defined as excessive sleepiness and low energy during the day—was most strongly associated with an increased risk of MCI. Those experiencing daytime dysfunction were more than three times as likely to develop MCI as those who didn’t report such symptoms. There are many types of dementia: Dementia is not a specific disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is an overall term that describes a decline in mental ability that interferes with daily life. People with dementia often have symptoms like trouble remembering, thinking, or making everyday decisions. These symptoms tend to get worse over time. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, and it mostly affects the elderly. Each form of dementia has a different cause. Though dementia mostly affects older adults, it is not a part of normal ageing. An estimated 6.7 million older adults have Alzheimer's disease in the United States. That number is expected to double by 2060, as per data from the CDC. In 2022, 3.8% of men and 4.2% women in US were diagnosed with dementia. The percentage of people increase with age from 1.7% for those aged 65-74 to 13.1% for those aged 85 and older. What type of sleeper are you? Scientists have discovered 16 types of sleeper after they have studied the activity tracker data for over 100,000 people. <h4>How was the study conducted? </h4> The scientists grouped people ranging from those who sleep all the way through the night and do not nap in the day, to those who suffer significant periods of wakefulness during the night. Out of this data, 7 types of insomnia were classified, which the researchers believed offered great insights. For instance, insomnia with short sleep duration was associated with impaired neurocognitive functioning, while insomnia with average sleep duration was linked to anxious-ruminative profiles. The activity tracker also showed how the sleep patters of those who worked in shifts affected because their working hours switched. Their circadian rhythms were out of sync. This is the natural process that regulates sleep-wake-cycle. When this is out of sync, it may lead to shorter, less good-quality sleep. <h4>What are the 16 types of distinct sleep categories? </h4> As per the research which based its data from smart wristbands used by the United Kingdom Biobank, there were 16 categories of sleep, distributed into 6 broad categories. Those that fall in the first category experience insomnia with long sleep duration and 'midawake', which is when you wakeup in middle of the night. Then there is a spectrum of people who sleep all the way through the nights without taking naps in the day. Cluster 2 and 4 are further split into a's and b's, which indicates sleep cycle of shift workers. <h4>Cluster: </h4> 1: Insomnia with long sleep duration and midawake 2a: Irregular sleep schedule 2b: Fragmented sleep with short sleep duration 3a: Insomnia with normal sleep duration 3b: Insomnia with short sleep duration 4a: Longer 24 h periodic sleep/wake cycle 4b: Major 5: Sleep without day-time sleep window Then comes clusters 3b and 4b, which are further split into 8 subcategories, which makes it the total of 16 categories of sleepers. 3b-1 is a bigger cluster and includes people who sleep deeply but cannot fall asleep easily once they are woken up. 3b-2 includes short-duration sleepers who show a mix of short wake-ups and some longer hours spent staring at the ceilings. While 4b-1, another large cluster is for the long sleepers and 4b-2 is all the morning people, and 4b-6 are all the night people. <h4>Cluster: </h4> 3b-1: Insomnia with short sleep duration and long term midawake 3b-2: Insomnia with short sleep duration and long and short term midawake 4b-1: Long sleeper 4b-2: Morning person 4b-3: Shorter 24 h periodic sleep/wake cycle 4b-4: Insomnia with short sleep duration and short term midawake 4b-5: Insomnia with normal sleep duration and long term midawake with less fragmented sleep 4b-6: Night person Scientists have pointed that those in the 4b-4 and 4b-5 categories are defined as 'preinsomnia', as both the clusters show normal wake-up duration in the middle of the night, but the former cluster wake and fall asleep repeatedly and frequently. <meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />

Our bodies are made of lots of elements, including carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, calcium, sodium, sulfur, and you name it. But a disturbing finding is that it also consists microplastics. These are tiny crumbs of plastic which trickle through our body and take up residence in some tissue or organ in our body. There are studies that show that microplastics and their smaller counterparts, nano plastics have reached almost every corner of our body, including lungs, liver, heart, guts, brain, and even testicles and placenta. Dr Heather Leslie, a leading expert in international (nano-macro) plastic research based in Netherlands and her team was the first to detect these particles in human bloodstream. The work gained momentum and more such research came into being. They delved into more questions, including: <h4>Which microplastics are in our bodies? </h4> The soil we walk on, the water we drink, food we eat and the air we breathe, all carries microplastics. These are particles as small as 1 nanometer and as large as 5 millimeters. Some have built up over the years, while others arrive daily, shedding from trees or our clothes, food packaging, and other products. <h4>Do microplastics ever leave the body, once in? </h4> As per Leslie, all of us are being "microdosed" with microplastics, all round the clock. There is no way to track how much is coming or going out of the body. Research has also found microplastics in stool and urine of humans. Experts suggest that if the review of animal data is to be believed, most of what we ingest or inhale leave the body during the trip to the bathroom. Only a small portion gets absorbed, however, there is still a lot of uncertainty. <h4>What do these particles do in our body? </h4> Once the microplastics are in our body, instead of passing through us, it moves across the thin membrane, often lining our gut and finding their way to the bloodstream. The larger the particle will be, the less likely it is to cross the biological barrier. However, there is no guarantee that it will never cross. Furthermore, airborne plastics can also be inhaled. Once these particles are absorbed in our bloodstreams, they get coated in proteins and fats, create a corona or a crown-like appearance. These foreign elements also find its way to breast milk, semen and can even cross the blood-brain barrier. <h4>Is it harmful for us? </h4> There is yet no one definite answers. Humans encounter pollutants throughout their life, given that, researchers are still trying to find out the best models for analyzing microplastics. However, several studies do suggest that there could be warning signs. However, there is yet to established a direct causal link. A group of Italian researchers found that people with microplastics in the plaques in their arteries were more likely to have a heart attack, stroke or to die. Other small studies have found higher levels in people with inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease.
