Valentine's Day is here and love is also in the air, but what is also important is that you take care of yourself. Valentine's day is all about the romantic gesture, sending chocolates to your partner and also going out on dates, relishing amazing food. However, a sudden increase in such processed foods and sweets could lead to health issues and trigger heartburn and indigestion. Especially if you are the one to follow the valentine's week religiously, chances are that you already have indulged in delicious cheesy food for a week now and it can leave you feeling stressed and uncomfortable for the special day itself. NHS UK, last year, released a statement to not ignore your heart burn, especially during the Valentine's Day, as it could further lead to complex issues. The release mentions, "if your heart burns with more than passion this Valentine's Day, don't ignore it." The Houston Heartburn & Reflux Center also noted that over indulgence of chocolates can make your loved one suffer from acid reflux, heartburn and can ruin your Valentine's Day.Chocolate is rich in fat, sugar and caffeine, which may trigger heartburn. Chocolate relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter muscle, which allows gastric content like acid to reflux into the food pipe and cause heartburn. Houston Heartburn & Reflux Center also recommends reducing or avoiding chocolate consumption, especially on Valentine's Day. In fact, the combination of food like chocolate, champagne for the celebration or coffee form the coffee dates could exacerbate acid reflux.Mindful EatingWhile health is utmost important, but Valentine's Day comes only once a year, and everyone wants to celebrate it. So, how can one celebrate it, enjoy it, relish delicious food, without putting them and their partner's health, especially heart health at risk? Dr Mayanka Lodha Seth suggests the practice of mindful eating. Doctor says to bond over lean proteins, fiber-rich vegetables, and whole grains instead of heavy, greasy and spicy food. "If you have dinner plans, ensure you bond over homemade lunch and breakfast, which are not too calorie-dense."Over EatingThe other pro tip is to avoid over eating. While treating your love could mean a slight overeating, so what can you do? Doctor suggests that the best way to deal with such situation is by incorporating smaller portions into your celebratory meals. "Also staying hydrated, avoiding or limiting acidic drinks such as alcohol or coffee, and sipping herbal teas promote digestion." Here comes a great idea, you and your partner could also go for a herbal or green tea date!Post-Meal ActivityA walk after dinner can reduce the likelihood of acid reflux, point out Dr Seth. Also, avoid lying down immediately after eating to avoid digestive issues. Cherry on top is that walking in fact is a great way to bond with your problem, to talk about your day, what makes you happy discuss things and plan your future together. While it is a great bond strengthening exercise, it could also help your body to stay healthy.Know Your TriggersThe doctor suggests that you must know what food triggers you, this way you can make mindful food selection while ordering. When proceeding towards dessert, make sure you go for dark chocolates in moderation and more fresh fruits, if you have the option to. "Ensure that you don’t over-indulge in sugar consumption, especially if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic. If you are unsure and never tested your blood sugar levels, add to your routine to take a blood sugar test every six months," recommends Dr Seth.Dr Mayanka Lodha Seth is the Chief Pathologist at Redcliffe Labs
