Fatty liver is a chronic condition when fat deposits inside the liver. There are two main types of this disease namely, Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and Alcoholic fatty liver disease, also called alcoholic steatohepatitis.
Blame it on a hectic lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits, fatty liver diseases have been a growing concern across the world. However, there is a new hack that is doing rounds on the internet to combat this condition-mixing ground coffee and turmeric together. While both these items have been known for their health benefits, a combination of both these is known to melt the fat around the liver.
How Can Turmeric Help You?
Turmeric is a ubiquitous spice in Southeast Asian kitchens. Known as "golden spice", it is packed with various nutrients. It has anti-inflammatory properties which directly promote longevity. Besides, it also boosts immunity and supports digestive and heart health. Some studies have shown that Curcumin (a component present in turmeric) inhibit the growth of cancerous cells, preventing tumours and cancers. However, there are a few side effects and risks associated with overconsumption of turmeric, including gastrointestinal (GI) upset, blood thinning, and liver disease.
How Does Coffee Impact Liver?
Coffee contains antioxidants and chemicals such as chlorogenic acid, which posses the potential to stimulate liver function. A study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology stated that coffee is beneficial for health in general and particularly for patients with liver disease. Consumption of coffee less than 2 cups/day protects against progression of almost all forms of liver disease. Usual mechanisms involved are prevention of fibrosis, carcinogenesis, and antioxidant effects.
What Happens When You Combine Turmeric and Coffee?
Mixing turmeric with black coffee may provide enhanced liver health benefits. Both ingredients are packed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and when combined, they may work synergistically to support liver function. While turmeric helps reduce liver inflammation, coffee can aid in decreasing liver fat. Additionally, the caffeine in coffee can boost metabolism, potentially assisting in breaking down fats in the liver.
How to Add Turmeric to Black Coffee
Incorporating turmeric into your black coffee is simple. Just add a pinch of ground turmeric to your brewed coffee. For better absorption, include a pinch of black pepper, which contains piperine—an active compound that enhances curcumin’s bioavailability. If you prefer a creamier texture, you can make a turmeric latte by adding turmeric, milk, and black pepper to your coffee.
While turmeric and coffee offer numerous health benefits, moderation is key. Excessive caffeine intake may cause jitteriness while consuming too much turmeric can lead to stomach discomfort in some individuals. Always consume these ingredients in balanced amounts to maximize their positive effects without adverse side effects.
