English presenter, a television personality and investor, founder of the confectionary company Candy Kittens Jamie Laing opened up about his tinnitus, said, "I haven't heard silence in 9 years." In Thursday's instalment of This Morning, Dr Raj Arora joined hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, where Jamie recalled the moment 9 years ago when he first woke up to a ringing sound that would not just go away.He shared that he thought it was coming from outside the house, but soon he realised that it was actually in his ear. He said the noise was high-pitched and sounded like a dog whistle. This was the primary symptom of tinnitus, a hearing or buzzing sound without an external source. "My story is that nine years ago, I woke up one morning and could hear this ringing. So, I searched my whole house then I realised it was in my head," he said. He also shared that the hardest thing is that no one can hear or see what is happening to you, and so it is like a solo problem. The high ringing noise becomes louder the more anxious or tired you get, he noted. "I think my thing was I never protected my ears...I went to a lot of nightclubs when I was younger."The star also shared that there are certain things which can help with tinnitus, including white noise, whale sounds, and hum of a fan. What Is Tinnitus? As per the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, tinnitus is the perception of sound that does not have an external source, so other people cannot hear it. It is described as a ringing sound, but some people may hear a roar or buzzing. There are surveys that says that 10 to 25% of adults have it, thus it is common, in fact, children too can have it. In some cases it goes away, while in some cases, it gets worse. When tinnitus lasts for three months or longer, it is considered chronic. While the cause of this is unclear, most people who have it may also experience some degree of hearing loss. Tinnitus is only rarely associated with a serious medical problem and is usually not severe enough to interfere with daily life. However, some people find that it affects their mood and their ability to sleep or concentrate. In severe cases, tinnitus can lead to anxiety or depression. Is There A Cure?Currently, there is not really a cure for tinnitus, but there are ways to reduce the symptoms, which includes the use of sound therapy devices, behavioral therapies and medications. SymptomsWhile the symptoms may vary from person to person, most could hear phantom sounds in one ear, in both ears, and in your head. The sound could be soft or loud, low or even high pitched. Sometimes, moving your head, neck or eyes or touching certain parts of your body may also produce the sound, this is called somatosensory.
