Masturbation offers several health benefits. For instance, it can helps reduce stress, improve mood, enhance sleep quality, and even lower the risk of prostate cancer. But one question that often arises is how it affects testosterone levels. The answer is complex and not entirely conclusive due to limited research on the subject.
Testosterone, a key hormone in men, plays a crucial role in libido, energy levels, and overall sexual health. While sexual arousal may cause a temporary rise in testosterone, there is no evidence to suggest that these changes are sustained. Testosterone levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day, with the highest levels typically observed in the morning.
Most of the testosterone in your body binds to proteins like albumin and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). These proteins regulate how much “active” testosterone your body uses. A smaller portion, known as free testosterone, flows through your bloodstream and attaches to cells. Total testosterone includes both free and bound testosterone.
Research on the connection between masturbation and testosterone remains inconclusive. For instance, a 2021 study in Basic and Clinical Andrology suggested that masturbation might prevent a decline in free testosterone levels over the course of a day. However, this effect was temporary and did not significantly impact overall testosterone levels.
Older studies have also examined the impact of abstinence. One study found slightly elevated testosterone levels in men who refrained from ejaculation for three weeks. On the other hand, sexual arousal alone—without ejaculation—does not appear to significantly influence testosterone levels, as shown in a 2012 study.
The bottom line? Masturbation is unlikely to cause significant changes in testosterone levels, either increasing or decreasing them.
Does Ejaculation Affect Testosterone Tests?
Since testosterone levels peak in the morning, doctors often recommend testing at that time. There is no definitive evidence that masturbating or ejaculating before a testosterone test impacts results. While there might be a minor and temporary increase in testosterone immediately after ejaculation, this is unlikely to alter test outcomes in a meaningful way.
Symptoms of Low Testosterone
Testosterone and sexual health are closely linked. Low testosterone levels may lead to symptoms such as reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, or decreased semen volume. Men might also notice weaker erections, low energy, irritability, or a lack of interest in activities they previously enjoyed.
These symptoms could signal broader health concerns. If you find yourself avoiding sexual activity more than seeking it, or experiencing persistent changes in sexual function, it may indicate low testosterone.
When Should You Consult A Doctor?
If you’re experiencing sexual health issues, changes in libido, or related symptoms, it is essential to consult a doctor. A simple blood test can determine your testosterone levels. Treatment options, such as testosterone replacement therapy, may be recommended if levels are low.
However, it’s worth noting that testosterone therapy can affect fertility, so discuss family planning considerations with your doctor. Regular monitoring of testosterone levels and therapy effectiveness is crucial.
