Are you spending thousands on hair care products but still not getting the desired results? The reason could be an unhealthy scalp. Many people overlook the health of their scalp, focusing instead on how shampoos, conditioners, and styling products benefit their hair. But for those dealing with scalp issues, constant itching, dandruff flakes on clothing, or the appearance of bumps can be concerning. The solution? Something as small as being gentler while shampooing or reducing the frequency of heat styling can make a difference.
The scalp contains about 100,000 follicles, each producing a single hair strand while secreting sebum to keep the skin moisturized and protect against infection. The scalp has its microbiome, and disruptions in this balance are linked to conditions such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and eczema. These issues can contribute to rough hair texture, breakage, reduced shine, and even premature hair loss.
Choose Gentle Hair Products: Avoid shampoos and hair care products containing sulfates, alcohols, and fragrances, as they strip natural oils and cause dryness and irritation. Hair dyes and bleach can also damage the scalp and hair shaft.
Shampoo Gently: Instead of vigorously scrubbing, massage the scalp while washing your hair. This promotes circulation without causing abrasions.
Reduce Shampooing Frequency: Overwashing can strip natural oils, prompting the scalp to overproduce oil, leading to greasiness. Washing three to four times a week is generally sufficient.
Take Omega-3 Supplements: Some studies suggest Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil may improve hair growth and density by stimulating circulation and reducing inflammation.
Eat Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Oxidative stress, which occurs when free radicals outweigh antioxidants, is linked to various health conditions and may also contribute to hair loss. Consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables can provide a wide range of beneficial antioxidants.
Consider Probiotics: Gut health is linked to skin health, including the scalp. Probiotics containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains may help balance the microbiome and support scalp health.
Use a Scalp Scrub: Just like facial exfoliation, scalp scrubs remove excess oil, dead skin, and dandruff while promoting circulation. You can use store-bought scrubs or make your own at home.
