Food allergies are very common and can have terrible outcomes in children. Many kids consume things without knowing they are allergic to them, causing them to break out in hives and anaphylactic shocks. Till now, the best way to deal with this issue was avoiding the foods you are allergic to whether it is peanuts, milk or sugar. A new study looked at a medicine called omalizumab, usually used for asthma, to see if it could help these kids. Researchers found that this drug helped many children eat foods they were allergic to. This is exciting because it means there might be a new way to help kids with food allergies. Instead of just avoiding foods, they might be able to eat them safely. The study showed that this drug could be a big step forward in making life easier for kids with food allergies and their families.Does The Drug Work Better Than Immunotherapy?Published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and presented at the 2025 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology/World Allergy Organization, involved comparing two types of treatment options for people with severe food allergies - omalizumab (Xolair) and oral immunotherapy (OIT). OIT involves eating tiny amounts of the problem food to build tolerance. The study found that omalizumab worked better than OIT for people who react to very small amounts of food. 36% of people on omalizumab could eat a good amount of peanuts and other foods without a reaction, compared to only 19% on OIT. This difference was mainly because many people on OIT had bad reactions and had to stop the treatment. However, if you only look at the people who finished the treatments, both methods worked about the same. How Safe Is Omalizumab? When trying new medicines, safety is very important. In this study, omalizumab proved to be safe for kids with food allergies. Almost all the kids who took omalizumab finished the study. This shows that the medicine was easy for them to handle. On the other hand, many kids who tried oral immunotherapy had bad reactions. Some even needed to go to the hospital. This big difference in safety shows that omalizumab is a much gentler way to help kids with food allergies. Knowing a medicine is safe makes it a better choice for families. After kids took omalizumab, researchers wanted to see if they could still eat their problem foods later. They gave the kids choices - start eating the food, keep trying oral immunotherapy, or just avoid the food. Many kids could start eating the foods they were allergic to, especially milk, eggs, and wheat. Some kids had small reactions, but most did well. This shows that omalizumab might help kids keep their tolerance for a while, even after they stop taking the medication. While peanut and tree nut success were lower, this is still a hopeful sign. This is still being studied to know how long the benefits last. While the study showed promising results, more research is needed. Scientists want to learn how long the benefits last and if it works for all kids. They also want to make sure it's safe for everyone. Even though the results are promising, it's important to keep studying omalizumab to make sure it’s the best option for kids with food allergies.
