A heart stroke is not a heart attack. Even though these words are used interchangeably, they are not the same. A heart attack happens when blood flow to heart is blocked by a blood clot, whereas a heart stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, which can cause brain damage.
A study published in the Journal Of Stroke titled Carbonated Beverage, Fruit Drink, and Water Consumption and Risk of Acute Stroke: the Interstroke Case-Control Study, revealed that drinking up to one carbonated beverage a day - either sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened - was linked to a 22% increased overall risk of stroke.
The researchers found that the risk increased sharply for those who consumed two or more of these drinks a day. The study further found that consuming one fruit juice or drink a day is linked to 37% increased risk of a stroke. In fact, if someone consumes two fruit juices or drinks a day, the risk of stroke is tripled. The research also found that women had the highest risk of stroke linked to fruit juice and drinks.
The study highlights that what you eat and drink can also have a big impact on your blood vessels when it comes to cardiovascular health. Frequent consumption of carbonated beverages can also increase the risk of stroke, including drinking more than four cups of coffee a day, while studies have found that tea lowers the risk.
Another study published in SageJournals titled Tea and coffee consumption and risk of acute stroke: The Interstroke Study showed that drinking more than four cups of coffee a day can increase 37% of risk of stroke and 32% risk of stroke due to a clot. Whereas, there was no increased stroke risk for lower levels of coffee consumption.
In contrast, the study also found that drinking more than four cups of tea a day was linked to a 19% lower risk of all types of stroke and stroke due to a clot.
Drinking three to four cups a day of black tea was also linked to 29% overall lower risk of stroke. Green tea, if consumed three to four cups a day, it can lower the risk of a stroke by 27%.
