This year has seen a rise in Tuberculosis numbers in Gurugram with about 7000 more cases than last year. Approximately 8000 new cases have emerged in the year 2024, noting a significant surge in numbers, health officials believe that the rise in these numbers is due to the new mandate that was passed in 2022 which compelled private hospitals to report any cases of TB. They believe this regulatory change is the reason why there is an improvement in compliance and has led to a substantial increase in reported cases in 2024.

What Does The Data Say?

According to health department data, Gurugram's only government hospital, the Sector 10 Civil Hospital has treated approximately 4,000 TB patients this year, while private hospitals have handled all the remaining cases. To enhance patient support, the district has initiated the Nikshay Mitra program, which provides nutritional and medical assistance to TB patients through community volunteers.

What Initiatives Have Been Taken?

While government officials have made a lot of effort to reduce the rate of TB which is currently 300 per 100,000 people, the target for 2025 has been set to 50 cases per 100,000. To address the issues and target these numbers the officials have taken multiple approaches and strategies that will help significantly reduce the number of TB cases. Apart from awareness campaigns and more treatment facilities for TB here are some other initiatives taken by the government.

Vaccines

Vaccines are a crucial part of preventive care that is taken against TB. The BCG vaccine is given to infants to significantly reduce their risk of developing severe forms of TB, especially in high-risk areas.

Sustained Treatment

TB requires a strict routine, and it is one of the most important things that they stick to their treatment regime as it is a long-term medication routine. They must take their medication on time and complete their antibiotic course. Many people stop taking it as they believe they are ok and do not need their medication but that causes them to relapse and get sick again. They also need to be monitored so that there are no treatment interruptions and drug resistance.

Targeted support groups

There are many people who are at higher risk of developing TB like people with weakened immune systems, people who are living with HIV, the elderly etc. By targeting these vulnerable groups the possibility of screening, preventive therapy and social support can help.
