Study Shows Overweight And Exercising Is Better Than Normal BMI And No Activity

SummaryPeople have different perceptions of how a fit person should look. You need to have a lean and athletic look to your body for it to be considered healthy by many people. But that is not true! Your BMI does not define your fitness level according to this study.

For the longest time, people had a one way look at fitness. If you are fit, either you are the buff kind with bulging muscles or you are the lean kind, with athletic build. But this worldview came from a place of ignorance and misunderstanding of how the body works. But does that mean someone with a broader frame cannot be healthy? No, it doesn’t!

Other studies have also shown how BMI is not always accurate, some people who are shown as over-weight or obese just happen to be people with a bulkier build. A recent study shows that being physically fit is more important than your weight for staying healthy and living longer. It found that how your heart, lungs, and muscles work together (your fitness) is a better sign of your overall health than just your weight and height (BMI).

You Can Be Overweight And Healthy

British Journal of Sports Medicine reported that being fit is more important than what the scale says. People who were fit, whether they were a "normal" weight, overweight or had obesity, had the same low risk of dying early as fit people with a "normal" weight. This is important because it shows that focusing on being active is better than just trying to lose weight.

Why Being Active Matters More?

Being active is really important for how well your body works. When you're physically active, your heart pumps blood better, giving your body the oxygen it needs. This makes your muscles stronger, your heart and lungs work better, and even helps your brain get the nutrients it needs. This helps protect you from getting sick, like heart disease, strokes, and type 2 diabetes. Focusing on being physically active also means you're not just worried about how you look, but about being healthy overall.

You can become physically active by starting with small things, like walking more or taking the stairs. Find activities you like walking fast, jogging, swimming, biking, or dancing. The most important thing is to do it regularly. If you have any health problems, talk to a doctor before starting a new exercise plan.
